I love living in the big city. However, I relish visiting a farm or a really nice vegetable/fruit stand. We have a farmers market here in Astoria. It's open from July to November on Wednesdays from 8AM-3PM. It's located on 14th Street between 31st Ave. and 31st Road.

A real "farm adventure" will take me to upstate NY or New Jersey. I love stopping at farm stands on the side of the road and getting a bundle of produce to take home. These trips are usually not planned but simply a nice surprise spotted from the road. For planned trips, especially this time of the year of pumpkin picking and hayrides, I found the following worthy resources in finding farms in close to Astoria:
New York - http://www.agmkt.state.ny.us/AP/FFGSearch.asp
New Jersey - http://www.state.nj.us/jerseyfresh/searches/roadside.htm
There is a real farm right here in Queens called the Queens County Farm Museum. Yes it's a real working farm with a great corn maze. It's about 15 miles east of Astoria...30-45 minutes depending on traffic.

Long Island has some great farms too! and after picking up some great fresh produce, you can stop at a winery and get some pretty good wine too! LOL
