In honor of National Burger Month...yes you've read it right, May is National Burger Month, I'd like share my thoughts on the recent openings of burger specialty restaurants around Astoria.
It seems that new burger joints have been opening up around Astoria lately. It was a lifetime ago when my allegiance to burgers belonged only to Jackson Hole. All through college I stored up cholesterol from this godfather of burgers. Their burgers are consistently good.
The latest burger joint to open up in Astoria is Just Burgers on the corner of Ditmars and 33rd Street. The place looks like a very casual place to get a quick bite. Meat experts Ottomanelli and Sons has opened up their own burger joint on the same block as their legendary butcher shop in Woodside. If they pair up with Six Points beers, I would never leave. The newly opened Butcher Bar on 30th Avenue and 37th Street is definitely on my list of next burger to try. Their meatastic menu is a culinary eye candy for meat mongers.
Even fancy burger places like Five Napkin Burgers have opened shop in Astoria. I can personally attest to the tastiness of their burgers. My personal favorite weekend burger brunch bistro is Bare Burger on 31st Avenue and 34th Street. You cannot go wrong with Bare Burger's burger offerings. They are passionate about serving organic food all the way to their condiments. The service has always been top notched every time I've gone. It should be easier to get a table nowadays since they've expanded next door and have opened up a new location on 31st Street and 23rd Avenue.
I've had a bad experience with The Burger Garage in Long Island City. I went there the first week they opened. They ran out of ground beef. Maybe it's just me, but if your name has the word burger in it and you ran out of ground beef, you might as well close the place down for the day. I've never been back, but I would like to give them a second chance.
Another place that I've also yet to try is Peteys Burgers on 34th Street and 30th Avenue (This past weekend, I noticed they opened a new location on Vernon Blvd in LIC). Peteys seems like a no nonsense straight up burger joint with a no nonsense burger. From what I can tell, they have a strong following in the neighborhood. Another place is Sweet Afton's burger. I've read that they "do right with its burgers."
So what is the next burger joint to open in Queens...particularly near Astoria? It seems that Five Guys is deliberately avoiding this area. Do I care...not really. Astoria appears to have plenty good burger options. Who do you pledge your allegiance to when it comes to tasty burgers?

Ahhhhh memories of Jackson Hole......so good! when I worked midnites in the city, the guys I worked with would draw straws to see who had to go get our dinner from JH! once a week!
ReplyDeletewhat about Burger Place on 30th ave?
ReplyDeleteI think you meant Burger Club. I forgot about that place. I think it is the newest one opened in Astoria. I also noticed that from twitterverse that Five Guys will be opening up a location in Astoria as well this year.
ReplyDeleteMy college buddies and I would drive all the way from Brooklyn to get burgers at JH once a week. We used to go to the one in the city on the east side.
