Plans for Reuse of the Historic Astoria Park Diving Pool as an Outdoor Performance Space

I've always thought that the Astoria Park diving pool is a great place for an outdoor performance stage. It is perfect idea for reuse of the space.

This week, an organization called Partners in Preservation, a partnership of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express is granting three million dollars to a worthy cause to preserve historical places in NYC. One of the place is the Astoria Park diving pool. I encourage everyone to VOTE FOR THE ASTORIA DIVING POOL! You can vote once a day. So vote often.

The structure of the diving pool is a natural fit for a stage. The covered pool can serve as dressing rooms and/or prop storage. The obvious location for the stage is the above the covered pool. The diving pool can be used as part of the stage and for lighting. The existing stadium seating is perfectly shaped for an ampitheatre...albeit it might be uncomfortable for some to sit on for long periods of time. There is also room to add folding chairs at the front. There already exist entrances and exits into the facility and what appears to be storage areas or offices. Although accessible from the parking lot, a better path should be constructed to allow for easier access.

The proposal to reuse the diving pool as an outdoor performance space was announced by Astoria councilman Peter Vallone last December. Mr. Vallone was also instrumental in getting the skate park constructed in Astoria Park.
