It's not quite a lazy sunday...but is hot! I've done a lot already today. I woke up early and walked to Astoria Bagels on Ditmars to get a fresh baked bagel with strawberry cream cheese and got a tall cup of joe from Starbucks on 31st Street. The vendors were just starting to setup for the street fair that will start at noon.
After breakfast, I headed out to @BIGNYC to browse for my next DIY project. To my pleasant surprise, the warehouse had added more space. The new space is just about as large as the old one. I really love this place. It's amazing what you can find here for very little cost. If you ever have a project in mind or perform some renovation, go here first. I found what I needed and then some. Can you tell what I am going to make? Tweet your guess @astoriafication.
I went back home to drop off my loot and headed out to the street fair on Ditmars and 31st. Chatted up with the nice folks at the Greater #Astoria Historical Society. Showed my support by buying one of their pricey baseball caps. It's worth it to support this non-profit....plus the cap looks great and 100% made in the U.S.A.
I Circled around the fair to check out the rest of the vendors...and got one of those yummy grilled corn. By this time, the heat has taken a toll in my "lazy Sunday."
I decided to go to Berry Fresh Farm on 43rd Street and Ditmars for some fruit before heading home. BTW, if you have never been to Berry Fresh Farm, I suggest that you check it out. It's probably one the best supermarket in the Ditmars area of Astoria for produce. While in the supermarket, I spotted pineapples for $2.50 each...score! It's exactly what I needed to make the cure.
The Cure
Nope, not the band from the 80s but a sure way to cool off any hot day of the week...especially Sundays...Piña Colada! To make this cure is successful, you must have the following: pineapple, rum, Coco Lopez cream of coconut, ice, and a blender. If you are missing any of the ingredients, don't bother...just jump in a cold shower.
To start, cut up the pineapple into 1" chunks. If you don't know how to this, google or go to YouTube, I'm sure someone has a tutorial (p.s. there's no need actually measure) ;-) . Grab a handful of ice and a handful of pineapple chunks and put it in the blender. Measure 4oz of coconut cream and 3oz of rum and dump into the blender. If you have one of those double-shot glass, it holds about three ounces. Grind the mix about a minute or so...Pour into glass, garnish with cut pineapples, add straw and consume.
There's no science in the making a piña colada. But this does not mean you can't experiment. You can make changes to the basic recipe base on your taste. For example, you can do one or more of the following:
P.S. Going to the Astoria pool also helps a lot during the hot days of summer. I highly recommend it.
