Aftermarket Tachometer for the Triumph Bonneville

After a short ride to Brighton Beach for some blintzes...

... I came back home to clean up some wiring in my bonnie that I did a couple of weeks ago. I also added a new tachometer that's been sitting on my desk for three weeks. For now, I am using the handlebar mount that came with the unit to mount the tachometer on my handlebars temporarily as shown here (eventually, I will install it to the right of the speedometer as seen here):

I've been meaning to get a tach for some time but did not want to spend the hundreds of dollars that Triumph  wants for theirs. A quick search led me to this post in TriumphRat.net. I bought an electronic mini-tachometer from BKRider for $43. Its usually for a Harley but it works well with my 2007 Bonnie.

The install was simple. The hardest part was finding the harness in the headlamp housing that I need to splice into. Here are the basic installation steps:
  1. Remove the headlamp.
  2. Find the speedometer harness. The trick is to trace the cable that comes out of the speedometer housing into the headlamp housing.
  3. Find the following wires in the speedo wiring harness: black green/red , red. These wires should be next to each other in the connector, numbers 7,8, and 9 respectively. The red wire is the tachometer data line, the green/red is the ignition power, the black is ground. Cut the wires and make sure to leave enough room on each side for splicing.
  4. There are four wires in the tachometer, blue (lamp power), red (tachometer dial power), green (tachometer data), and black (ground). Short the blue and red wires. These two will connect to the ignition power (green/red). The green wire will connect to the red wire, and finally the black will connect to the black wire.

Solder the splices to ensure a solid  connection. I recommend using heat shrink.

Be safe and happy riding!
