Due to affects of Hurricane Sandy, gasoline stations with gasoline in the NYC area are far and few between.
I first noticed the gasoline shortage last Wednesday when I rode my motorcycle to Brooklyn. I had not noticed that I was running on reserve until it was too late. I tried looking for gasoline to no avail. I had to dump my motorcycle in Brooklyn Heights. It is still there as I write this. It is very frustrating that after a week, stations in NYC, particularly in my neighborhood of Astoria, gasoline stations have not seen regular deliveries. If you are lucky enough to find a station with gasoline, be prepared to wait at least an hour.
During this time, I've collected some resources that may provide some insight on which service stations have gasoline. I suggest you call the station first to make sure that they have stock. None of these will guarantee that you will be able to fill your tank. Consider factors such as when the data was updated and the number of people ahead of you. Finally, I do not endorse any of these sites. I collected them with the hopes that it might help others find gasoline easily during this crisis.
- Gas Buddy - Popular gas price finder website is providing a nice simple web interface to find gasoline in the tri-state area.
- Hess Express Inventory Spreadsheet - Directly from Hess Express is a spreadsheet that is updated hourly shows gas inventory in their tri-state locations.
- Wright Express - Provides a mobile-optimized web interface, iOS and Android application to help find gas stations with fuel by showing the date of gas card transactions. Presumably this indicates that gas was just purchased at that station.
