I am lucky enough to live near Astoria Park where it can feel like a vacation all summer long. We are only a couple of weeks into summer and already Astorians have been treated to a carnival and fireworks.

This past July 4th weekend I took a couple of days off for a slightly longer weekend than usual and had a "staycation." I always enjoy having dinner picnics in the park during the warm summer nights. It's a real treat when there is music and a movie.
Concerts
This past Thursday, the summer concert series in Astoria Park debuted with the Beatles tribute band,
Strawberry Fields. Every Thursday until August 14th a new band will be playing on the great lawn of Astoria Park at the 23rd Avenue entrance. This summer's line up includes
Forever Ray,
The Devotions,
Motor City Revue,
Michael Patrick's Ring of Fire (A Tribute to Johnny Cash), and
The Regulars. How cool is that?!

Movies
Starting July 28th, the summer movie nights in Astoria Park will open with
The Goonies. This movie was filmed in another town called
Astoria in Oregon, all the way on the other side of the United States. Thereafter a new movie will be shown every Monday night at 8:30 until August 25. This summers' line up is a sure winner. It includes
Despicable Me 2,
The Wizard of Oz,
Dirty Dancing, and
Finding Nemo.
Astoria Park Pool
I only have one complaint about
Astoria Park Pool, it's old and due for some renovation. Other than that, it's a wonderful place to be on a hot summer day. The best time to go is when it first opens in the morning. There is usually a short wait to get in. It's best to get there around 11:30 when the line has thinned out. They have very stringent rules on what to wear. Swimming attire is a must. Gym shorts and cut-off shorts won't do. Bring a combination lock if you have to store items in the locker while you are in the pool.

What is there to complain about really...the pool is free of charge. Get sandwiches from
Sal, Kris, & Charlie and have a picnic in the park and then go to the pool when it gets hot.
Astoria Park Track
On the south side of Astoria Park is a running track. Here you'll see a lot of activity during the summer months. I love running on this track. It's well kept (except for the lack of grass in the middle of the track) and it does not get crowded. If you plan to run, do it early in the morning or when the sun is down in late afternoon. It can get very hot in the middle of the day.
